Abstract:

The main objective of this research is to study certain aspects of parallel processing, and in particular to make a preliminary estimate of the economic implications of parallel processing compared to serial processing. Parallel processing is defined as the simultaneous operation of two or more components of a system processing two or more different jobs. Serial processing is defined as operating a system upon one job at a time. The research was performed in four general phases 1 a study of published research reports pertinent to parallel processing, 2 an analysis of five types of functioning non-computer parallel systems, 3 the development of the logical structure of an automatic process control system and a conceptual model of a parallel processor, and 4 computational simulations of the proposed parallel system to investigate its speed of operation relative to a modeled serial system.
