This report covers the evolution of the ASTIA automated search and retrieval system. Early consideration and punch card approaches are treated briefly. The current system and programs are described in detail with the exception of the creation of the Thesaurus which is covered in two other ASTIA publications -AD-227 000 and AD-247 000. The programs discussed are for the UNIVAC Solid State 90 magnetic tape system. Flow charts are included of the program now in use which executes ten simultaneous searches to four levels of coordination. Modification of this program to provide for either ten six-level coordinations or any combination of a 60-descriptor coordinationation is also discussed.
