Abstract:

Floquets theorem and the reflection symmetry properties of Maxwells equations are used to establish the relationship between scattering by two dimensional periodic structures in free space and equivalent waveguide problems. For structures such as strip gratings, having periodicity in one direction only it is shown that the free space problem is equivalent to the sum of two waveguide problems and vice-versa. For structures with periodicity along two axis it is shown that four waveguide problems must be solved in order to determine the complete solution of the free space problem. Only when more than one basic cell of the periodic structure is contained within the waveguide walls will a single waveguide problem be equivalent to the free space problem as far as dominant mode fields are concerned.
