Abstract:

The general theory of continuous-film lubrication is presented. The results for gas-lubricated bearings are shown to be capable of generalization to any fluid with a linear-pressure-density relation. In particular, the results are applicable to lightly-loaded bearings employing any single-phase substance. Gas-bearing design formulas for both infinite and finite-length bearover ings are summarized. A new analysis for edgeeffects in finite gas-bearings operating at high speed is presented. Finally, rapid slide-rule methods are illustrated for constructed load coefficient and attitude angle curves. Author
