Abstract:

The thermionic properties and evaporation rates of various dispenser cathode systems were investigated. The systems consisted of a refractory matrix such as a carbide, boride or silicide of W, Mo, or Ta and a Ba dispensing compound such as barium silicide. Data obtained on the thermionic constants showed that the systems containing W2C, WC, TaC, and Ta have favorable emission characteristics. However, the evaporation rate of Ba from these systems is much higher than is desired over in practical applications. For cathodes incorporating Ba Al4 as the dispensing agent, the evaporation rate was much higher than in the systems containing BaSi4. The effective work functions were also slightly higher than those obtained with BaSi4. Alterations are being made in the Ba dispensing alloy to lower the evaporation rate of Ba. Author
