ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION RESEARCH DIVISION. An empirical classification of world representative desert surface types has been developed in the course of twenty months of research, using field and laboratory techniques, in the desert regions of southwestern United States. Each of the principal types was encountered during the course of the field investigations, and is represented both in the United States and in foreign desert regions. On the basis of land forms and their associated surface characteristics, the classification recognizesthe following types 1 Playas, of which there are five subtypes 2 Desert Flats 3 Bedrock Fields, in three categories 4 Regions Bordering Through-flowing Streams 3 Alluvial Fans and Badlands 6 Dunes 7 Dry Washes 8 Badlands 9 Volcanic Cones and Fields and 10Desert Mountains.
