Simultaneous measurements were made of the oscillations of current, voltage, light, and sound in the dcarc. A direct comparison of any 2 of the types of oscillations was made by means of a dual-beam oscilloscope. The oscillations were found to be of 2 types HF high-amplitude oscillations occurring at currents above 15 amp and LF low-amplitude oscillations of a uniform nature occurring at currents below 15 amp. One basic cause of both the LF and HF oscillations is the motion of the anode spot across the surface of the anode due to the arcs own magnetic field in combination with the natural configuration of the electrode face.
