AN INVESTIGATION OF THE GASOLINE AND MIXED FLUORINE-OXYGEN PROPELLANT COMBINATION

Further investigations were made on the merit of the hydrocarbon and mixed F-O propellant combination, and the determination of the optimum conditions for high specific impulse was attempted. Twenty-five tests were performed with oxidizer mixtures containing 0, 33, 50, 67, and 100 mole- F. Maximum performance values were obtained with the oxidizer consisting of 67 mole- O and 33 F. The maximum specific impulse was 272 lb-seclb and the characteristic exhaust velocity was 6720 fps. Tests in which 100 F was used as the oxidizer resulted in damage to the test engine. Tests made with 67 F produced appreciable C those with 50 F yielded much less C. No unburned C was found after any of the other tests.
