Abstract:

Methods were investigated for culturing, identifying, and classifying these flora. Obligate, nonclostridial anaerobes numbering 230 were isolated in duplicate scrapings from the arm, rib, sternum, coccygeal, and thigh areas of the skin of 6 men and 1 woman. The percentages of the total anaerobic facultative population varied with the skin area. Extensive tests indicated the most of these organisms had a barely demonstrable growth in a medium of yeast extract 1g, agar 1g, sodium thioglycollate 2.5g, resazurin 0.001g, and distilled H2O 1000ml. When a utilizable amino acid, purine, or pyrimidine concentrations of 0.1 was added to the medium, growth was readily determined. Duplicate testing was performed upon 166 organisms for the utilization of 18 amino acids, 7 purines and pyrimidines, urea, citric acid, gelatin, and glycogen. Preliminary results indicated that 16 of these organisms were related to Micrococcus prevotii, 15 to M. activus, 14 to M. anaerobius, 12 to M. niger, 11 to M. aerogenes, and 1 to M. variabilis. In addition, there were 15 strains of anaerobic streptococci, 5 of Propionibacterium acnes, 58 of M. saccharolyticus, and 80 strains bearing no relationship to any previously described anaerobic micrococcus.
