VISCOSITY OF THE NITRIC OXIDE-NITROGEN DIOXIDE SYSTEM IN THE LIQUID PHASE

A rolling-ball viscometer was used at 40 deg to 280 deg F and up to 5000 psi to determine the effects of temperature, composition, and pressure upon the viscosity of NO and NOsub2 mixtures. The results indicated that the viscosity of the liquid phase is not greatly influenced by changes in pressure and composition. The effect of pressure and temperature was in reasonable agreement with available data for the viscosity of pure NOsub2. AD-2113a Experimental measurements of viscosity were made for mixtures containing 0.774, 0.920, and 0.991 wt fractions of NOsub2. The absolute viscosities were calculated from at least 3 roll times at each state. The calibration of the instrument in the case of mixtures containing 0.991 wt. fractions of NOsub2 changed by 1.4 during measurements. This variation was distributed over the 5 temperatures between 40 deg and 280 deg F in a linear fashion. Studies of the 0.991 mixture suggested that the results are less reliable than those for the mixtures containing 0.774 and 0.920 wt fraction of NOsub2. These 2 mixtures caused a calibration change which was less than the probable error of measurement. The results for the latter mixtures and for pure NOsub2 involved a standard deviation in the smoothed viscosity of 47 micropoises. The uncertainty was attributed to the viscosity none was assessed to the pressure, temperature, or composition. A probable error of 122 micropoises was found when the data for the 0.991 wt fraction of NOsub2 were included.
