The relative effectiveness of various alloy elements on the rate of S transfer was observed by the comparison of the rate constants for acid and basic slags. Of the elements studied, C, Si, Mn, and Al increased the rate of S transfer from Fe to C-saturated slag with increasing effectiveness in the order named. The data support a 3-stage mechanism where RC, Si, Al or possibly Mn and MFe, Mn, or possibly Si.
