Abstract:

The investigation of the formation of N2H4 from NH3 in a glow discharge for large-scale production is reviewed, and a detailed discussion is given of the behavior of glow discharges. Data are included on the effects of power input, flow rate, reactor pressure, and presence of inert diluents on the formation of the discharge products. The study of the decomposition of NH3 showed significant results particularly when helium was added to NH3. Under certain conditions NH3 conversions up 3.4 were obtained as compared to the usual values of 0.2 to 0.3. The maximum power yield was 22 gkw-hr. The data were not sufficiently conclusive for a final decision with regard to the practicality of the use of glow discharges for the production of N2H4 from NH3. Recommendations were made for a limited study to be made of electrodeless discharges employing reactors with dielectrics having high dielectric constants. See also AD11051
