Abstract:

A literature survey was made of low mol wt aromatic compounds which are liquid at 95 deg F, stable up to 400 deg F, and contain 2 or 3 nuclear rings. A list of 17 compounds considered to be representative of common chemical structures was compiled from the data. These compounds were evaluated as to thermal stability, viscosity at 100 deg and 210 deg F, density, and 6p. The results indicated that the aryl phosphates generally provide compounds with the desired properties. Investigation into the aryl phosphate field yielded 3 liquid compounds with thermal stabilities above 700 deg F 1 di-p-tolyl 1-naphtyl phosphate, 2 di-m-tolyl 1-naphthyl phosphate, and 3 tri-o-chlorophenyl phosphate. The first 2 compounds gave good results for flash and fire points, autogenous ignition temperature, and hydrolytic stability. The chemical syntheses are discussed as well as the procedure for the literature survey.
