CASCADE CHARACTERISTIC NUMBERS FOR TWO-DIMENSIONAL COMPRESSIBLE FLOW

A theoretical determination of relationships between cascade variables and parameters and the pressure rise, flow deflection, and losses through the cascade was made to obtain basic information useful in turbomachinery design. Isentropic uniform flow upstream of the cascade was assumed, and tunnel-wall interference was neglected in definitions of cascade characteristic numbers. The relationships between cascade flow coefficients and 1 the obtainable pressure ratio and 2 the efficiency of a compressor element were determined under the assumption that uniform and stationary flow existed at the entrance to the blade rows. Test evaluation methods for determining loss coefficients are discussed as well as quality factors for cascades.
