CYCLOGENESIS OVER SOUTHERN EUROPEAN AND MEDITERRANEAN WATERS
NAVAL AIR STATION NORFOLK VA
Pagination or Media Count:
The Northern Hemisphere Historical Weather Maps from 1945 through 1951 were used as a basis for this investigation. Results indicate that the surface cyclo-genesis is highly dependent on the upper-air flow pattern as given by the contours at 500 mb. Low-level thermal fields provide a much less important contribution than they do over the US, especially in the earlier stages. The upper-flow patterns are classified as southwesterly, northwesterly, blocking, and westerly. Cyclogenesis following the westerly pattern is cataloged, and a method is given for its prediction 48 hr in advance. The composite case is illustrated along with detailed analyses of 16 recent synoptic examples. Data from 51 storms of this type from 1945 to 1951 are included.
