Abstract:

A method is outlined for proving the validity of the Prandtl stress solution to the plane-strain problem of a flat rigid punch or footing. Soils are considered which have cohesions whose angles of internal friction phi are less than 75 deg. Limit analysis shows that the Prandtl value is an upper bound for the collapse value of the average pressure over the punch. A statically admissible extension of the Prandtl stress field into the rigid region is obtained so that this value is also a lower bound and is therefore the true value of the average pressure. A perfectly plastic material may be considered as a soil for which phi approaches limit of 0. Analysis shows that the value 2 pik k designates the shearing stress on a plane of slip is a lower as well as an upper bound for the collapse value of the average pressure in the indentation of such a material.
