A comprehensive review is presented of the literature pertaining to methods and instruments for measuring rain and snow. A partially annotated bibliography with subject index is included. For applications in climatology and hydrology, present-day gages are considered adequate for rain measurements, but they require improvement for more satisfactory snow measurements. However, for cloud-physics and radar studies, a demand exists for a rain gage that accurately portrays rates of rainfall as well as amount.
