The methods employed in investigating personnel problems associated with the maintenance and operation of shipboard electronics are evaluated. A multimethod approach was selected which utilizes a battery of complementary, comprehensive, observational methods. Tests were conducted aboard ships in the Pacific area. Information was obtained from members of the research group, the subjects, and their supervisors. The card sort, job questionnaire, general questionnaire, and training questionnaire were the most efficient methods of obtaining information. Limitations were encountered with the diary, checklist, critical incident and general interview, repair records, and ability requirements scale. The critical incident interview method demonstrated the need for careful pretesting of questions and training of interviewers.
