Abstract:

A theory is developed which is to permit the prediction of the shape and position of the salt wedge of estuaries and canals in terms of quantities such as the densities of the fresh and salt water, the average river depth and velocity, etc. A relatively simple model is assumed. The estuary cross section is assumed to be rectangular and uniform, and the bottom is assumed to be plane and horizontal. Attention is confined to the time independent problem. The existence is stipulated of a sharp interface between the fresh water and the salt wedge a density discontinuity, and the absence of mixing between the layers. The density of each layer is considered to be constant. The experimental results of Farmer Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution WHOI, technical report, ref. no. 51-99 are utilized along with the theoretical work of Stommel and Farmer WHOI, technical report, ref. no. 52-88.
