ON THE ATTENUATION OF THE SHOCK WAVE ABOUT AN AXIALLY-SYMMETRIC BODY

A formula is derived for the shock-wave attenuation about a 3-d dimensional body. The flow behind the shock was assumed to be isentropic at large distances from the body. The study indicated that 1 the pressure rise across the shock wave decays as the inverse three-fourths power of the ridial distance r from the body axis, and 2 the shock wave has no asymptote, although the shock angle approaches the free-stream Mach angle as r approaches limit of infinity. Experimental data obtained from spark shadow-graphs are presented to support the theory.
