The physiological principles concerned in load-carrying into battle are explained. Experimental procedures are outlined which may be used in the testing of equipment produced in the future and which were used to enable the deductions to be made. It is concluded that carriage of loads on the hips is preferable to other methods and less muscular effort is required to carry loads when these are close to the body and disposed in a balanced fashion.
