The absence in borate and phosphate buffers of a second polarographic wave as is present with thenoyltrifluoroacetone TTA in chloride, acetate, and NH sub3 buffers is attributed to the complexation of TTA with buffer components. The first polarographic wave is attributed to a 1-electron reduction of the carbonyl group adjacent to the trifluoromethyl group, followed by dimerization to form the pinacol. The second wave is caused by the reduction of the thenoyl carbonyl group to the carbinol. The diffusion current is shown to be a linear function of the concentration optimum analytical results are secured in acetate buffer. Polarographic data indicated a zero-order reaction for the alkaline fission of TTA in NH sub3 buffer. Examination of the nature of the interaction between the B species and the carbonyl group adjacent to the triflouromethyl group indicated the complex is due to the formation of a 4-membered ring between B and the 2 hydroxyl group Os on the C of the hydrated carbonyl group.
