The basic objectives of the program are to measure the radiometric brightness temperatures of snow, sand, soil, mud and rock, both in the field and in the laboratory, and to relate these measurements to physical parameters, changes in environment and sensor frequencies. The major effort was devoted to field measurements of in situ, undisturbed material. The general principles of microwave radiometry are discussed in some detail in AD-627 667. That report also describes the equipment used. Some modifications of that equipment have been incorporated into the total system, and have increased the efficiency of operations and data acquisition.
