Abstract : The objective of the program is to establish at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio an in-depth training program in the Molecular Genetics of Breast Cancer. The goal of the program is to train highly qualified pre-doctoral students in the genetic, cellular, and molecular basis of Breast Cancer. The training program is conducted within the Molecular Medicine Ph.D. Program by a select group of faculty whose research projects are relevant to breast cancer. Breast cancer meetings and Molecular Medicine Symposia are an integral part of the training program for students supported by the Breast Cancer Training Program. A major strength of the program is the high quality of the Program faculty, and the interactive nature of the Breast Cancer research community in San Antonio. The program faculty are organized into four subprograms, which encompass scientists studying different aspects of breast cancer and cancer therapy, as well as fundamental mechanisms of cell growth, differentiation and molecular genetics. During the reporting period, research by the six students supported by the training program resulted in the publication of five peer-reviewed articles. Thus the program is making excellent progress in the training of upper level students. Additionally the program continues to attract qualified students for entry into the program.
