Abstract : The ASTROS (automated Structural Optimization System) procedure provides a multidisciplinary analysis and design capability for aerospace structures. The engineering analysis capabilities in the system include structural analysis (static and dynamic), aeroelastic analysis (static and dynamic) and automated design. A specifically designed data base and executive system were implemented to maximize the system's efficiency, flexibility, and maintainability. This report is the Theoretical Manual for the ASTROS system. As such, it describes the analytical foundations that were used to develop this multidisciplinary system. Concepts of multidisciplinary analysis and design are presented, as is an overview of the architecture of the ASTROS system. The bulk of the report is then devoted to the engineering disciplines, which include finite elements modeling, static and modal analyses, steady and unsteady aerodynamics analyses (including static aeroelastic analyses and flutter response), dynamic analyses (including transient response, frequency response and blast response), and automated structural design. Three appendices address special topics of the ASTROS procedure.
