Abstract:
The accuracy and dispersion of flechettes are investigated by 1 An exploratory firing program 2 A supersonic dynamic testing wind tunnel program 3 Development of a theory for jump and dispersion for computer computation and analysis and 4 Precision range firings at this Arsenal. The exploratory firing program reveals the importance of fin and body damage, the blast region, and saboting. The dynamic wind tunnel program yields the static and dynamic aeroballistic stability coefficients on various flechette designs. The theory and analysis program has presented the effects of the initial launching conditions, the various stability coefficients and asymmetries and has provided accuracy criteria. Lastly, the flechette firing range program provided a correlation between theory and experiment which clearly suggests that high accuracy and low dispersion in flechettes is possible when optimum aerodynamic design is coupled with good saboting and minimization of blast.
