Abstract : U.S. Army Edgewood Chemical Biological Center, Research and Technology Directorate, BioSensors Branch spearheaded a technology down-select to identify surface-sampling collection and identification technology candidates to be used with the current Department of Defense Joint Biological Tactical Detection System (JBTDS)-selected Chemring Detection Systems (Charlotte, NC) ATHINA platform. A panel of subject matter experts, consisting of members from across the biodefense community, was assembled to evaluate and down-select submissions in response to a request for information for sample surface collection and identification technologies. Each technology was analyzed using an adjustable scoring matrix that was specific to the needs of the JBTDS program. This scoring matrix was designed to assess the time from collection to identification, number of biological warfare agent targets, size, compatibility of JBTDS identifier, ease of use, maturity, and consumable storage requirements. The JBTDS program placed an emphasis on technologies with both surface collection and integration with an identification device to minimize human interface.
