Abstract : The project involved the collection and classification of 2,271 cued data points at the Massachusetts Military Reservation using the MetalMapper sensor. Anomaly densities at this project site were considerably and consistently higher than those seen on previous Demonstration Projects, and there is no plan by the Government to relinquish control of the site. With anomaly densities and continued Government control of the site in mind, the goal of this project was the identification and removal of large, explosives-filled munitions (60mm and larger) potentially contributing to groundwater contamination rather than the identification and removal of every munition present. Approximately 90% of the targets of interest (TOI) at the site were correctly classified as TOI, with a 78% reduction in digs. The majority of the missed TOI were 60mm mortar illumination rounds, which proved difficult to differentiate from smaller fragments given their thin-walled construction. The ability of the MetalMapper to significantly reduce excavations on future projects would depend significantly on the importance placed on identifying these specific munitions.
