Abstract : This broad review provides some insights into the vast eld of Autonomous Systems in the context of Defence applications and C2 in particular. There are significant challenges in the areas of human- computer interaction and the legalities of war that may trump technical issues in terms of impediments to automation. Many technical areas are also covered and the paper recommends developing or adopting strong engineering processes for building Autonomous Systems, research into human factors and strong engagement with the international community with respect to the Laws of Armed Conflict.
