Abstract : The Joint Conference of the 50th Annual Technical Meeting of the Society of Engineering Science (SES) and the ASME-AMD Annual Summer Meeting was held at Brown University during July 28-31, 2013. The SES Technical Meeting is held annually to foster and promote the exchange of ideas and information among the various disciplines of engineering and the fields of physics, chemistry, mathematics, bioengineering, and related scientific and engineering fields. The 2013 SES 50th Annual Technical Meeting was hosted by the School of Engineering, Brown University, located in Providence, Rhode Island. The symposium tracks were: (i) Mechanics of Fluids and Thermal Systems; (ii) Mechanics of Biological and Soft Materials; (iii) Mechanics of Solids and Structures; (iv) Mechanics in Materials Science; (v) Mechanics Education; (vi) SES 50th Anniversary Symposium (invited visionary talks). Each of the above tracks have multiple symposia that spanned the spectrum of research topics of current and future interest. Several symposia were planned to bring together communities of scientists and engineers spanning Applied Mechanics, Applied Mathematics, Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, Biology & Medicine and Geology.
