Abstract : The 2010 MFLP is DMDC's first survey designed for longitudinal study. Traditionally, DMDC has conducted cross-sectional data collections whereby participants respond to questions at one point in time and are not followed past this time point. While cross-sectional surveys are able to provide a snap shot of how military families are managing the military lifestyle, they do not provide any causal links between specific military-related life events, such as deployments, and resulting changes in well-being. Longitudinal analysis follows spouses over time to determine how events impact long-term functioning. This effort addresses the continuing need for information from spouses on these issues, in respect to changes incurred during the military members' deployment, to monitor changes in attitudes/opinions, establish baselines prior to policy changes, and evaluate effectiveness of recent initiatives. A longitudinal analysis of the 2012 MFLP and its 2010 and 2011 predecessors will enhance our understanding of how military-related life changes may specifically affect spouse well-being and family readiness.
