Abstract : Tidal forcing has been inserted into eddy-resolving global simulations of the HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM). The tidal flows over realistic topography generate internal tides, i.e. internal waves at tidal frequencies. Similarly, geostrophic flows over rough topography generate internal lee waves. While it is not yet possible to resolve internal lee waves in global models, their impact can be parameterized. We have inserted parameterized topographic lee wave drag in global simulations that do not include tidal forcing.
