Abstract : DRDC Atlantic has developed a Clutter Model for range-dependent environments based on adiabatic normal modes; however, this approach is expected to fail for strongly range-dependent environments. Alternatively, parabolic equation (PE) models are robust in strongly range-dependent environments. In this study the use of the DRDC PE model (PECan) was used to determine the feasibility of computing the reverberation and target echo fields in a variety of ocean waveguides. Calculations are compared to some problems from the U.S. Reverberation Modelling Workshops. The PE method reverberation estimates compare favourably to previously published results obtained by other authors and methods.
