Abstract : An analytical approach to understanding the fundamental mechanisms of microscale corrosion has been developed. Aluminum alloy 5083 (H131 temper) was characterized before, during, and after corrosion in aqueous environments of varying ionic strength and pH. Morphological changes were observed both in situ and ex situ using atomic force microscopy. Compositional differences of alloy surfaces were mapped and identified using scanning Kelvin probe microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy.
