Abstract : Brigadier Samuel B. Griffith II, a highly decorated Marine who participated in key battles in the Pacific during the Second World War, was widely regarded as an expert on Chinese military history. If the People's Republic of China (PRC) continues on its current trajectory and develops into a formidable world power, the United States must be prepared to meet the challenges presented by an arising near peer competitor. Griffith's writings on China reveal an astute understanding of Chinese military thought that remains relevant for the 21st century military professional. This paper examines some of Griffith's works to provide a framework of understanding for interpreting the actions of the PRC.
