Abstract : Recent advances in understanding the mechanisms of degradation of Ultra-High Temperature Ceramics (UHTCs) under hypersonic flight conditions are reviewed. Experimental and modeling efforts using leading edge samples of HfB2-20% (vol) SiC within a scramjet rig are presented. Other experimental efforts to study the behavior of UHTCs under simulated hypersonic conditions are reviewed.
