Abstract : We completed a series of pilot studies towards the development of DNA-programmed mesoscale and nanoscale materials. We developed a computational and experimental infrastructure that enabled the translation of arbitrary three-dimensional models into DNA sequences that encode their assembly. We developed a suite of surface chemistries to functionalize a variety of mesoscale materials with DNA oligonucleotides. Finally, we demonstrated the ability of these DNA-linked surfaces to mediate surface-surface interactions in a DNA sequence-specific manner. In a second line of research, we applied these principles to create higher-older nanometer-scale plasmonic structures from DNA-linked gold nanospheres and nanoshells.
