Abstract : The hypothesis of this research is that inhalable SPIO nanoparticles surface-functionalized with EGFR targeting ligand, when exposed to an appropriate magnetic field, will enable highly efficient and specific tumor cell death by hyperthermia. In the second year of this three year research program, we have demonstrated effective cellular uptake and tumor cell kill with EGFR-targeted SPIO particle-mediated magnetic hyperthermia. Additionally, we have shown the effectiveness of EGFR targeting in enhancing the lung tumor concentration of SPIO particles in a mouse lung tumor model. Future studies will examine the in vivo efficacy of targeted SPIO particle-mediated hyperthermia in a lung tumor model.
