Abstract : Experience is valuable to improving performance in every field. History serves as the community record of experience, and within the military community it is valued as one of the instruments of situational analysis. Published records of military dental history are very few, and dentists frequently focus on dentistry s vast and growing scientific information pool, to the neglect of military history (experience.) To this date, there are only three published books presenting aspects of the history of Army dentistry. One is limited to the period of World War II, another concerns dental care at the US Military Academy at West Point and the third is the most comprehensive and detailed history covering the period from the Revolutionary War until 1941. Realizing the need and importance to capture more of the Army dental care experience, starting in 1974 staff members at the Office of the Chief of the US Army Dental Corps produced a pamphlet which chronicles major and significant events in the oral health care of Army beneficiaries. The pamphlet has been updated over the years and a change of title to Highlights in the History of Army Dentistry. The Highlights you are now reading is the update of the 2007 version.
