Abstract : This report results from a contract tasking University of Seville as follows: The key goal of the proposed research is to produce a family of single crystal and multiphase materials that exhibit high temperature protonic conductance, and superior mechanical properties at elevated temperatures. The program will simultaneously pursue three broad, integrated objectives: (i) to develop directionally solidified high temperature protonic conductors, (ii) to formulate a microscopic model of the mechanical behavior that will elucidate the defect interaction and transport for this class of materials and related structures, and (iii) to correlate structure and conductance from the atomistic and electronic length scales. These will be accomplished in eight project tasks: fabrication of simple perovskites; fabrication of mixed perovskites; fabrication of duplex structures; microstructural characterization; mechanical properties; impedance spectroscopy; optimization of conductance in mixed perovskites/duplex structures; and, hydrogen profiling measurements.
