Abstract : This paper discusses the theoretical and empirical foundations of the use of storytelling in instruction. The definition of story is provided, and four instructional methods related to storytelling are identified: case-based instruction, narrative-based instruction, scenario-based instruction, and problem-based instruction. The article describes each of the four instructional methods and provides an example of the method within an instructional setting; identifies research foundations and relevant theoretical literature; and proposes research questions and agendas for further study of the use of storytelling in instruction.
