Abstract : This report provides key findings regarding South Africa's current science and technology (S&T) capabilities. Specifically, the report examines South Africa's stated S&T strategy, leading research centers, defense-related research and development (R&D), and technology transfer controls. Sources for this report include the Web sites of South African government agencies, official governmental white papers, the Lexis-Nexis news service and other proprietary databases, and analyses from several Jane's publications and the RAND Corporation. For the purposes of this report, S&T is defined as all scientific study and experimentation directed toward increasing fundamental knowledge and understanding in physical, engineering, environmental, and life sciences, and the systematic expansion and application of scientific knowledge to develop useful materials, devices, systems, and methods. R&D includes research in the fields of science and technology, combined with evaluation of integrated technologies, representative modes, and prototype systems in a high-fidelity and realistic operating environment, and with the associated engineering and manufacturing development tasks necessary for production.
