Abstract : Directed energy (DE) weapons are here. Groundbreaking work continues every day on high power microwaves and high energy lasers. These weapon systems offer several advantages over traditional weapons: speed-of-light delivery, deep magazines, graduated effects, and minimal collateral damage. DE weapon systems also offer new challenges including energy termination, energy reflections, electromagnetic interference, and many others. The United States cannot safely field DE weapon systems until sufficient developmental, operational, and live fire testing is complete. Current DE test and evaluation capabilities are fragmented, fixed, and not functionally integrated. The nation's DE test and evaluation infrastructure is insufficient to support current and next generation DE weapon systems.
