Abstract : The africanus group of the subgenus Stegomyia Theobald, genus Aedes Meigen, is characterized and diagnosed. Keys to the identification of species are provided. Information on the present status of the africanus group of species is summarized. Aedes (Stegomyia) maxgermaini, a new species, from Cameroon, is recognized. Aedes (Stegomyia) pseudoafricanus Chwatt is reported from the Ivory Coast and Sierra Leone for the first time. Lectotypes are designated for Aedes (Stegomyia) africanus (Theobald) and Aedes (Stegomyia) luteocephalus (Newstead).
