Abstract : Teams can be a significant resource to business leaders and can help lead to greater program successes. Little empirical data exist on what strategic characteristics make teams more effective. This study was conducted on 57 student project teams in 12 classes (327 respondents) in a Defense Acquisition University (DAU) executive level, six- week program management class in six different locations. The study not only underscores the significance of team focus on performance but also highlights how team characteristics affect team focus and performance. The results of this study have applications to the successful use of project teams throughout the DoD and in the commercial industrial workplace.
