Abstract : Nanostructured magnets share many of the basic principles as for other nanostructured materials such as geometric confinement, physical proximity, and chemical self organization. These principles are illustrated by means of several examples drawn from the quests for ultrastrong permanent magnets, ultrahigh-density magnetic information storage, and biomedical applications. This symposium addresses the challenges and scientific problems in magnetic nanostructures, from the fundamental issues to fabrication and applications. This symposium has provided a forum for physicists, chemists and materials scientists/engineers and bio-physicists, to present current research on advanced magnetic materials and applications and to initiate collaborative interactions between them. This symposium has also been a good opportunity for young scientists (graduate students and postdoctoral fellows) to present their research results and interact with established members of their own and other scientific fields.
