Abstract : Fuel cell R&D in the United States before 1958 was minimal but, with the advent of Sputnik, interest in fuel cells exploded. While NASA pursued fuel cells for space applications, Army Labs at Fort Monmouth and Fort Belvoir pursued air breathing fuel cells for tactical and ground applications. By the mid 1960's, both Army Labs had strong efforts and each had staffs of over eight researchers directed at fuel cell technology.
