Abstract : In order to complement wrought HSLA-80, it was decided to attempt to develop a substitute for cast EY-80 which would permit welding without the need for preheating. A number of heats of very low-carbon, higher-nickel modifications of HY-80 and low-carbon modifications Of HY-130 were produced and cast into test blocks. Heat treatment studies were performed and mechanical properties were evaluated. In addition, weldability tests were performed to assess susceptibility to hydrogen-assisted cracking when welding without preheating. The experimental alloys appear to be capable of meeting the mechanical property requirements of HY-80 in section thicknesses up to at least 12 in. The weldability tests revealed no HAZ cracking of the experimental alloys when welded without preheat while cast HY-8fl was found to suffer severe underbead cracking under the same conditions.
