Abstract : In this exploratory research program we investigated the energy absorption behaviors of systems consisting of hydrophobic nanoporous silica particles immersed in liquids. The two principal goals are (1) validating the concept of the use of nanoporous materials in energy absorption systems; and (2) identifying the optimum surface species. During the 9 month of ARO support much progress has been made on both of the goals. In the following, we describe the achievements. The future directions are also discussed.
