Abstract : Fort Bliss, Texas is a Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) installation located in the northern Chihuahuan Desert of western Texas and south-central New Mexico. Encompassing approximately 445,170 hectares (1.1 million acres), it is the single largest TRADOC installation. Because Fort Bliss is located within an arid ecosystem characterized by slow vegetative growth, its land is more susceptible to long-term disturbance. Fort Bliss natural resource managers require a timely and cost-effective method for characterizing and monitoring land condition at various spatial scales and levels of detail. This report documents evaluation of linear spectral demixing and spectral brightness and greenness index correlations with abundance of land-cover types as alternative methods for more detailed characterization and monitoring of land condition using coarse resolution satellite imagery. Detailed conclusions on the acceptability of various strategies and techniques are presented along with recommendations for related research.
